Visit to the David Peat Retrospective

On at Street Level Photoworks, 103 Trongate, Glasgow until 5 August 2012.

I was very moved by the BBC documentary last month about David's work in film and photography and was keen to see this exhibition. A chance preview of the accompanying book "An Eye on the Street (Glasgow 1968)" led to my visit today.

A terrific exhibition of street photography in two parts. The Glasgow images from 1968 taken on a camera he was gifted for his 21st birthday, and shots from trips around the world from 1970 onwards. All are full frame, no cropping, and well laid out. Above all what strikes the viewer is the photographer's interaction with the subjects, much humour and yet the stark reality of life in the tenement areas. Particularly moving images of children, which couldn't be taken today without permission.

My favourite shot here is the one of the two older women glancing disapprovingly at the glamorous lady walking by.

Highly recommended. More information on exhibition here.
