"Oor Wullie! Your Wullie! A'body's Wullie!"

12.5C and bright with long sunny spells. Light WSW breeze.

Grocery shopping this morning at Sainsburys and in M&S at City Quay/Gallagher Retail Park in Dundee then we got Maeve the Deerhound from the car and had a walk up to the Howff. As we passed the McManus gallery we noticed this statue of Oor Wullie, commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of his first-ever appearance in The Sunday Post. See below for further information.

We carried on along the road and had a quick walk round the Howff. It was pleasantly warm today.

Back home for lunch then we took Maeve for a walk. Just a 2 mile loop down to the shore road and round the main road and back home.

Six nations rugby on the telly this afternoon. Scotland 29 France 18.
(Yesterday England 25 Wales 21)

Later there was some more tidying ... it seems endless !

Oor Wullie statue unveiled in Dundee - www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk

A’body favourite wee laddie Oor Wullie has been immortalised with his very own statue (sculptor Malcolm Robertson).
The cheeky schoolboy, who has delighted readers for generations, has been cast in a 4ft bronze sculpture and placed proudly outside The McManus art gallery in Dundee.
The statue was commissioned to mark the 80th anniversary of his first-ever appearance in The Sunday Post.
Ever the troublemaker, he’s been posed aiming his pea-shooter at a nearby statue of Robert Burns and can be found just 350 yards from the Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx statues at the city square.
At the unveiling, Former Broons and Oor Wullie editor Morris Heggie was thrilled.
He said: “The adventures of Oor Wullie have delighted Scots for eight decades. In that time, the mischievous scamp has become a much-loved national treasure.
“We are used to seeing Wullie in the black and white world of print but here he is in 3D - in his own fabulous bronze statue.
“A magnificent tribute to Dundee’s cheeriest son.
“Oor Wullie himself would be delighted that the bronze catches him about to embark on one of his legendary pranks.”
A group of eager fans braved the cold to see the statue revealed for the first time.

Oor Wullie - DC Thomson (Publisher)

Oor Wullie and The Broons are cartoon strips that appear every week in the Sunday Post newspaper. Both strips have achieved legendary status and in 2016 they celebrate their 80th anniversary!

Oor Wullie is the iconic wee Scottish laddie from the fictional town of Auchenshoogle. The image of Wullie sitting on his upturned bucket, wearing his famous black dungarees is as familiar to Scots as Edinburgh Castle. Wullie wages a constant war against boredom and he includes attending school in his list of boring things to do. He is a great righter of wrongs and will bravely tackle bullies to protect his lifelong pals Fat Bob, Soapy Soutar and Wee Eck. His occasional girlfriend Primrose Patterson is the only one allowed to call him William.

Wullie loves life, fun and laughter and even the figures of authority in his world; Ma, Pa and long-suffering PC Murdoch have to smile at his energetic pranks. He speaks a unique brand of Scots language which includes his famous sayings ‘Jings!’, ‘Crivvens!’ and ‘Help Mah Boab!’

The marvellous artwork and well observed storylines means that everyone recognises a little of themselves in these classic tales. The strips often feature celebrity appearances and the famous faces that appear in Oor Wullie or The Broons see it as a great honour.

In 2016, Oor Wullie celebrates the 80th anniversary of his first appearance in the Sunday Post.

With a sense of benign mischievousness and an inability to lie, Oor Wullie has a big heart, is full of tricks and is an inspirational leader of his ‘Gang’ consisting of Fat Bob, Wee Eck and Soapy Soutar. He lives in the fictional town of Auchenshoogle and his adventures always start and end with him sitting on his upturned bucket.  He wages war on boredom or embarks on some get-rich quick schemes sometimes with his occasional girlfriend Primrose and often coming up against his old adversary, PC Murdoch.

Oor Wullie is so loved by the Scottish nation that in a survey conducted in 2004 the young scamp was voted ‘Scotland’s Favourite Son’, beating William Wallace and Sean Connery into second and 3rd places, with Rabbie Burns a distant 4th!
