Roquebrune

Sunday
Today we walked along the front and then around Cap Martin, a beautiful wooded peninsula, much of it covered with very expensive walled estates, some dating back to the 19th century and the "Belle Epoque". From the far side of the Cap, you see the tall buildings of Monaco a little further along the coast, but our destination for the afternoon was the hilltop village of Roquebrune, dominated by its ruined medieval castle. It was a long steep climb up to the village from the coastal path, by a series of staircases - I wouldn't want to tackle it on a hot summer's day! the village is a maze of narrow streets and narrow passageways, some of them vaulted and covered. Then there were still more steps up to the castle, from where there are magnificent views over the rooftops of the village, Cap Martin, and along the coast to Monaco. Having explored the castle and the village, we enjoyed a drink, before returning back down the many steps, and then returning to Menton by train. It had been a great day, but quite tiring, so we treated ourselves to dinner out in the evening!
