A time for everything

Peille

Monday

Today we left the coast and headed inland a little way to explore several of the hilltop villages of the Alpes Maritimes. The first village  was Saint Agnes, which although lying only 3 km as the crow flies inland from Menton, takes a good 20 minutes on a winding mountain road. Besides exploring the narrow alleyways and passages of the village, we climbed up to the ruins of an old castle. We then continued to the village of Peille, shown in my blip, over another mountainous road, narrower than the previous one. Fortunately, it was obviously a little-travelled road, and we didn't meet any other traffic! This was an interesting village to explore, since in various locations around the village they had old photographs showing how the village looked about 50 years ago, including the old fountain, which was used in those days for washing clothes. Our final village was Gorbio, which also lies very close to Menton, and affords some beautiful views down over the town. A day of magnificent scenery - so glad I have a husband who is quite happy driving on these narrow mountain roads - one of the advantages of learning to drive on the narrow roads of Guernsey I guess - you had to know how wide your car was!
