A view from Jeanneb

Pecking order.

This morning at Coppice Pond feeding station there was the unusual sight, these days, of two Canada Geese. Unusual because we've hardly seen any this winter.

When I started blip nearly 6 years ago I remember being thrilled at seeing some Canada Geese in Myrtle Park in Bingley and then later on the St Ives Estate Pond.
They then appeared in huge numbers and made a huge mess. ( The grass area alongside the pond still hasn't recovered from them using it as a breeding area about 3 years ago).
Having now had a young swan on the pond for the last 18 months he has now become quite assertive and drives the geese away.

So this morning these geese were doing well in getting a good share of the feed. Interestingly they kept pecking the ducks to drive them away (nearly all drakes today so the females must be nesting) and the ducks in turn were chasing away the poor Coot on the outer edge of the circle of feeders!

Just before we left 'Swanny' came into view. He got his share of the food that was left and then turned and drove away the geese!

That seems to be the order of things on Coppice Pond.
