But, then again . . . . .

Blue Tit.

We had our windows cleaned yesterday and it’s so nice to be able to see the bird feeders again. We’ve been noticing recently that some blue tits (or perhaps it’s just the one) pick out peanuts and throw them away, eventually they find one that fits their specification and fly off with it - others just fly in, grab one, and clear off. I actually went as far as picking up the discards and, after thoroughly washing them, testing them; they tasted fine.

This chap – or chapess, I’m not certain even they can tell the difference – was one of the picky ones. (S)He was a good photographic model as (s)he wasn’t in a hurry. They’re lively little numbers so you need a surprisingly fast shutter speed to obtain a sharp image. I had noticed when checking that the pictures on the camera screen that there appeared to be something, probably a feather, sticking out of its head  - but it could be easily cloned out. Closer inspection reveals that it has a deformed beak, not a serious deformity in itself though it may cause some discomfort but, in the cold hard world outside our kitchen window, it will put this bird at enough of a disadvantage to severely shorten its life. Mrs TD is talking about grinding up his nuts for him and buying some mealworms; she does care about the animals.
