U-Bahn München: 73/100 Olympiazentrum

Munich underground: 73/100 Olympiazentrum

Today's entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series is Olympiazentrum underground station. It was opened in May 1972 to provide access to the venues of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Since then until the opening of Oberwiesenfeld and Olympia-Einkaufszentrum stations in October 2007, it was the northern terminus of the orange U3 line.

In anticipation of the crowds of the Olympic Games (and later the football matches of Bayern Munich, which moved into the Olympic Stadium after the Games) the station was built with two wide island platforms, to be able to cater to a large ridership in a whort time.

The station design is similar to the other station of the Olympic extension (e.g. Bonner Platz), with exposed concrete walls including relievos, and white paneled ceilings, which give the station a bright appearance.

Olympiazentrum (which translates to 'Olmypic Center') gives access to the Olympic park and its sports venues, the Olympic village (now mostly repurposed to student dorms), BMW's Munich headquarters and factory, and the cathedral of cars which is BMW World.

As with Moosach underground station, the next station under Munich East railway station, will be a long time in coming: it is currently refurbished, which will take until September 2016.

This photo deviates quite a bit from my usual goal of symmetry, but it was simply not possible for me to achieve something decent here.
