Meeting Rose

We didn't get our walk as the weather was so bad, but we had a great night as we met a young friend Rose who works for DOC in Haast. She'd come over for a film showing in the community centre. A friend (in his 50s) of hers had done 50 mountain marathons in 50 consecutive days, in aid of a mental health charity. He was there to introduce the film, and explain his passion for this charity, which resulted from him having found the body of his brother who had committed suicide. He was convinced that running, or other physical activity made a difference to his own mental health. The film was inspirational. So many people, including Rose, joined him and supported him. And of course we got to see some amazing footage of the NZ mountains.

My wristband is a memento - you can google it at www.fiftythemovie.co.nz

It was great to see Rose. Although she is very happy in her job and life there, it is a long way from home. Her poor mum, my friend Katy, misses her so much.
