Berwick Church

We woke up fairly early to bright sunshine in D and A's attic room in Lewes. I read a little bit of my book (Mark Cocker's book on Crows) and then we went down for a relaxed breakfast with our friends. Their son N came over for breakfast and they told us all about a recent visit to India and showed us some great photos they took.
Later we went for a walk on the South Downs and then down into the valley for a visit to Berwick Church. On our visit to Charleston yesterday, we found out about the murals that my great aunt Vanessa Bell and her companion Duncan Grant painted in the church.
These were commissioned by the Bishop of Chichester during World War Two, reviving an old tradition of painted murals in downland churches. Apparently they received rather mixed reviews from the local parishioners. There were those who thought that the artistic licence involved - depicting members of the holy family in local landscapes - was sacrilegious, while others liked the homeliness of them.
