Eventful

A fundraising evening for various refugee-friendly initiatives in Cambridge. A mixture of speakers, some auctions to make money and local businesses and bands donating food and music for free.

Glenys Newton, a local Cambridge writer and storyteller, spoke wonderfully about her experiences in Calais and welcoming refugees from boats on Lesbos. Cue multiple tears.

Then along comes Heidi Allen, Tory MP for South Cambs, who is a rare voice in her party pushing for strong government action on refugees, especially the plight of unaccompanied children who have disappeared during their journeys and from camps in France. It was the first and probably last time a Tory MP has moved me to tears. Where I share the same views, I mean. There will be plenty more tears of despair to come in my lifetime.
