The Saltire

This is at Athelstaneford, East Lothian, the supposed site of the origin of the Scottish Saltire. On the eve of a battle between the Picts and onvading Angles from Northumbria in the 'Dark Ages', St Andrew came to the Pictish King saying that he had had a vision of victory.  The next morning, a white cross of clouds appeared against the blue sky, Victory for the Picts resulted in adopting St Andrew as the patron saint and the white cross on blue as the flag.  The leader of the retreating Angles, Athelstan, was killed hence the name of the village.  The story can be heard in a visual and audio format inside a dinky orange doocot (when open) behind the church.

I waited ages and took quite a few photos before getting one with the flag blowing just the right way!
