Emmersdorf

Today is a public holiday, Christi Himmelfahrt or Acsension Day. We drove with some friends to Krems, about an hour away to take a train trip through the Wachau. This beautiful part of our state is a wine and apricot producing area, home to my favourite white wine, Grüner Veltliner. We have a membership card for our state which entitles us to many freebies, including the train trip today. The interesting thing about using this card is that you try things you normally wouldn't consider. We originally thought we would take a cruise on the Danube but the weather was not very kind, so we will leave it for a bit later in the season. The train follows the Danube to Emmersdorf where we had time for a lovely lunch (with a glass of Grüner Veltliner) and a walk around the town. It is a very pretty little town, gorgeous with masses of pink, mauve and white lilacs, which grow wild. You can see the lilac blooms in the foreground of the viaduct image and also in the extra along with a chestnut tree loaded with white flowers. It turned out to be a wonderful trip through the spring landscape, although it was sad to see many of the vines damaged by the severe frosts we had recently. I hope my GV will not be in short supply next year.
