Life in Sunny Dubai

Can't believe one of these Rainbow milk features appeared in Karama! It's actually been here for a few months, and I've kept meaning to get close to get a picture with it. Crazy that it's taken this long because the buildings in the back are the ones we live in! [And yes, that IS the Burj Khalifa on the left - see through "The Frame"]

... and if you're wondering about the significance of the milk... fresh milk didn't come to Dubai until the late 80's. Prior to that, from the late 70's we had long life milk and before that, it was either powered milk (Nido) or Rainbow evaporated milk (think Carnation). This is the milk I have in my tea/coffee!

So, the reason why we passed this feature is because we walked over to the typing centre to enquire about the changes to entry visas for UK passport holders. G was told to go back to the airport to extend her visa. When she asked how much it would cost, they said six or seven hundred. The visa is actually free when you arrive at the airport.

The typing centre confirmed that it would cost 800 dirhams to extend the visa. At that price, a four hour round trip to the Hatta border to get a free visa made a lot of sense, so we set off immediately! G had a hiccup again and had to be brought into the building. Apparently, the systems aren't quite linked, so changes made at the airport of the current visa being extended and the fine being waived didn't show up. It got sorted with a phone call, and G went off to do her thing and was back in no time... and given a new entry visa - valid for 40 days! Confirmed by two different people - which is most interesting, but recent newspaper articles have said that the ten day grace period is being taken away. Oh well; guess we'll find out late June...

It is getting really hot here! Rested for a couple of hours before going out again to try to get a rattle sorted with the car, get some dinner, get the car washed etc etc etc... Can't believe how fast weekends disappear! A new work week tomorrow.
