Into Chicago

Sunday - for Saturday see previous blip

Sleeping on the train is interesting – rocking, rolling, creaking, whistle hooting. But we managed and by morning we were in Minnesota and travelling alongside the mighty Mississippi. We followed this incredible river for a long way, until we crossed it and entered Wisconsin. And eventually we crossed into Illinois and arrived at Chicago.

This train journey has been a great experience and being able to watch the changing landscape has been quite wonderful. But what has been a revelation is the meeting of so many really interesting people. I think we were the only ones from the UK and there was a lot of interest in what we were doing and what we thought of things. We had many fascinating conversations about travel, countries, politics. So, my blip is a guy who we got to know quite well. He is Mexican by birth, but has been an American citizen for a long, long time. A lifetime spent in the architecture business, he had a lot to tell us about buildings all round the world. He wrote on a napkin a list of the places we must visit in Mexico when we go on our next adventure . . . ! He had a long and complex conversation with Gordon about Mexican history. He gave me a 2 dollar note ‘for good fortune’ – very rare and often only acquired by someone gifting one to someone else. I will not be spending it in a hurry.

We are now in Chicago and looking forward to sleeping in a bed that stays still!!
