Weaning in Action

It was like Springwatch under the elder tree this afternoon.  I heard a starling racket and grabbed the camera.  A male starling had arrived with four offspring to feed.  They pursued him relentlessly whilst he hoovered up the fat bits which had been knocked from the feeder.  Within minutes, one juvenile pecked at a piece of bread and it dawned that he could feed himself - he was gone in an instant, and then there were three.  A short time later one more found his own fat bit and flew up in to the tree to enjoy it.....and then there were two.  These two hung around a little longer being fed by dad but I looked away briefly and when I looked back.....there was one.  It all took less than fifteen minutes.  I imagine dad was relieved!
