A MAJOR JOB

Last night Mr. HCB and I walked round to see the progress on the repairs to our water supply, as we knew the road was now partially open, with traffic lights, after being closed since Sunday.

We spoke to two men, one of whom had come down from Manchester with a water tanker and he confirmed that we were still getting our water from this tanker, which was pumping water into the mains and then on to us.  However, he said that many people, passing by in their cars, were complaining that their water pressure was low and about the mess, but as we said, at least we still have water.

The other young man we spoke to said he would be there keeping watch all night because the hole they had had to dig was very deep - so the sign saying “Danger Deep Excavation” was not wrong!  He told us there was a lot of work to do before the broken and leaking pipe could be replaced, involving not only them but also the Gas Board, and it would probably not be finished until the weekend.

We went round again this morning to see how the work was progressing - it is a major job because there are also gas, sewage and fibre optic cables all in the same large hole.  We spoke to several of the men, some of whom came from as far away as Coventry, Bristol, Reading and London and told them what a great job they were doing and how grateful we were - some of them expressed surprise and said that no-one had ever told them that before.

How fortunate we are to live in a country where major work is done within a week and yet we still have water flowing through our pipes - I have written to Thames Water to tell them how grateful we are.

A word out of your mouth may seem of no account,
but it can accomplish nearly anything -
          or destroy it!
