Swan and cygnet

Wednesday
We were away for a long weekend, escaping the rain and the floods, heading to the south in search of the sun! I didn't get out for a walk yesterday, so this afternoon I walked down to the river to see how things were drying out. The river road is now dry, though patches of mud remain in places, and some water remains on the opposite side of the road to the river. You can see from the muddy leaves on the hedges how high the water had been - at least a couple of feet. In fact this swan and cygnet are not in the river or a pond, but someone's still partially flooded garden. Fortunately it is a really long garden, with the house right at the back and a little higher, so it's possible the water didn't get as far as the house. I passed a number of houses with piles of water-damaged furniture and miscellaneous stuff by the curb, Such heartbreak and hard work ahead for so many people in a number of countries.
