D-Day

We drove to Arromanches this morning. Seventy two years after the landings.
We stopped up on the cliffs at the viewpoint but the fog meant there was nothing to see. That didn't stop Miss L trying! (see extras)
My mum and dad walked down the cliff road into town with the Little Misses while Mr K and I went into the Arromanches 360 circular cinema. Nine giant screens show archive footage and photos of the landings, the Battle of Normandy and the 100 days it took to reach and take Caen.
To see footage of people dying on the beach not 100 yards from where we were stood was sobering. And the carnage inflicted on the coastal towns and rural villages and lanes - 20,000 civilians killed.
We had planned to have lunch in Arromanches but it was heaving so after a mooch around and a bit of shopping - prints for me and new stylish French raincoats for the Little Misses - we headed back up to the camper van for lunch. Via the frites van in the car park which served delicious chips  and sausages cooked on a barbecue next to the van. Yummy!
The fog started to lift after lunch so we left my mum and dad and headed back to the beach at St Aubin. The Little Misses played on the beach while Mr K and I sat at the same restaurant as yesterday - watching them, soaking up the sun and drinking beer. Perfect!
It was sunny and blissful and made me feel very grateful for the bravery of so many seventy two years ago on the very same beach.
It's unimaginable.
