Rags of light

Who Saw Marjory Daw?

After the rather drunken night watching the Olympics, tonight was a more sober and cultured affair. I went over to Lewes to watch a play called Who Saw Marjory Daw, performed by a company called The Rude Mechanicals.

As Shakespeare lovers will know, the name of the company comes from a group of amateur actors in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

This group tour round Southern England in the summer performing in outdoor settings. It's physical theatre performed in a Commedia dell'arte style, with white faces and stock characters. Who Saw Marjory Daw was a (slightly too) complicated tale of spies, dictators, hippies, journalists and politicians, all set in Britain in the 1960s.

All good fun and very well acted. Lots of people took a picnic and wine. I sipped sedately from a bottle of water!
