A Day Worth Recording

Fool

Warwick Folk Festival.

Spoilt for choice today but resisting a montage. I quite like this one although it breaks practically every photographic rule in the book (other than the one saying break the rules sometimes.)

Morris sides generally have a lead dancer, often called the 'fool' and he (or she) will be dressed more exotically than the rest. This schizophrenic fellow from Oyster Morris is part morris man part 'Green Man'.

Spent most of the day following the touring Mollies.

This proved unexpectedly useful as I needed to call on my first aid training for the first time. One dancer had been impacted by a rampant Rapper dancer earlier in the day. All seemed fine but when the headache extended to not wanting to even sit up it was time to call in an ambulance into the crowded Warwick streets. All turned out well after a few hours observation, well, waiting really, in the hospital.

In the evening I managed to find a small session in a small pub bar (both too small really) and joined in on the bodhran. I've not played for yonks but must still have my hand in, given I was thanked, rather than lynched, for playing (they tend not to be the most popular of instruments, being brash, loud, and typically played by those who failed at piano, guitar, etc. cough).

Q. How can you tell it's a bodhran player at the door?
A. The knocking gets faster and faster; you open the door and they still don't know when to come in.
