Life through the lens...

Laughter in the rain

The end of an era, as Batley Variety Club closes for the last time tonight, although it is now known as The Frontier .

Opened in 1967, it was then the biggest variety club in Europe, and certainly put Batley on the map.
Mr C had his bachelor night out there in 1967, when he went with several mates to see the farewell performance of Gerry and the Pacemakers. Top of the bill was Tony Hancock.

We went a few times with friends.
Twice to see Shirley Bassey when she was at her very best. I can still see her in that fabulous gold slinky dress singing Big Spender.
Also saw Neil Sedaka a few times. What a great performer.
The title of my blip is one of his songs, which is a favourite of mine.
Those were the days. Chicken-in-a-basket, and babycham, the height of sophistication !
We knew how to enjoy ourselves.
Among the other stars were
Roy Orbison ,Louis Armstrong , Gene Pitney, Tom Jones, and many more.
Happy memories.
I believe it is now going to be turned into a gym.

The sun we were promised never arrived. Rained all day.
May be better weather tomorrow .
Hope you all have a good weekend.
