La Rochelle

Today we got up early for a 2 hour drive to La Rochelle. We all agree it was well worth the drive, with a beautiful old port, lots of shops, cafés and bars, plus a picnic lunch in the park. We did an awful lot of walking, managed to spend a bit of money each on souvenirs before heading to the aquarium at about 3pm. It was a very busy high point of our day, and we came out at 4.30 ready to flake out. We walked back to our car, and headed out of the town, and along to the coast where we found a perfect car park, a minute's walk from the sea. We then ate our second picnic of the day on the beach. It was very stony, but tranquil. We dipped our toes in, but no swimming. By then it was 6. The long & awkward drive home started at 7.15. We didn't get back until 9.30. The road I wanted was 'barred' due to road works so we ended up going out of our way, then home on yellow roads. It was tiring, especially for Jon who was driving - but as he said, it was the same distance he drives to Cambridge for work. Everyone enjoyed the day, and it has given us food for thought when planning future camping trips to France, as we'd like to revisit La Rochelle.

Too tired for games, so it's bed for me & a day at home tomorrow. Hopefully joined by more sun!
