Puzzlement

Warm sun on your face while there are grey clouds above. Fine raindrops spattering your arms from a blue sky. How does that work?

This morning we visited the Scottish parliament building: modern, welcoming, designed to be non-oppositional. An interesting space with a much greater feel of democracy than what I know of the Westminster building. It started me thinking about what it is to be British - for me  a jumble of facts, ideas, history, feelings and gaps. Reading Dr Winifred Ewing, mother of the house’s words from May 1999, "The Scottish parliament, adjourned on the 25th day of March, 1707, is hereby reconvened," jostled all of them. They will resettle in different places but it will take a while.

This afternoon a Sicilian mime-circus. A delight for all the children there, including those hiding inside us grown-ups. This evening a comic who asked who in the hall was English. At the inevitable cheer he welcomed us to Europe.

And finally a fond farewell to WhiskyFoxtrot. What a brilliant companion she’s been in Edinburgh these last few days!
