Into Battle

If there's one thing I love, it's a bit of enthusiasm and ever since she sussed out where were going on holiday, Abi has been insistent that we must visit the site of the Battle of Hastings, which she studied in history, last year. 

The Minx and miniMinx, more interested in sunshine than history on this occasion, decided to have a day at the camp, so it was only the Pearsons in convoy to the town of Battle, named after the abbey, which was built by William as penance for the bloodshed at the battle which was the culmination of the last successful invasion of Britain.

It was rather expensive to get in but it turned out to be worth every penny. Izzy took control of the map and guided us 'round, while Abi impressed everyone with her recollection of what she'd been taught last year. It was a beautiful day for a gentle stroll around the ruins of the abbey, reading the information boards along the way. 

Here's a shot I took of all the kids, reading one of the boards and looking at the map. I loved the fact that they all enjoyed the trip, today, from the excellent open air talk about life after 1066 and examining the ruins, to the poignant few minutes spent looking out over the battle field, trying to imagine what the fight must have looked like.
