Wild Lilies

Here in the mountain foothills,  we are fortunate to live near many unique gardens where we can wander, contemplate, photograph and soak in the beautiful scenery. This morning a friend introduced me to Quarryhill Botanical Garden. We walked along gravel paths, found the lotus pond, but the last lotus had come and gone leaving only huge leaves and distinctive seed pods behind. We stood beneath the 'cotton candy tree' so named because of its unmistakable scent. From various vantage points we could see what was left of the original quarry, steep rock cliffs surrounding a pond filling the original quarry. Well placed tables and benches invite picnickers , yet we seemed to be the only people in the place. I put a couple of pictures of this lovely place in extras.

As it says in the brochure, "The wild origin of the plants at Quarryhillsets the garden apart, ensuring that it is not only a beautiful setting, but a modern day ark, preserving species that are disappearing at an alarming rate. Annual seed collecting trips take place in partnership with botanical gardens worldwide, to conserve biodiversity. Unlike Bouverie Preserve, where I am still on the list for the next docent class a year from now, Quarryhill is open to the public every day, which is why i purchased a household membership on the way out. Even if I never go there again, I feel it is money well spent, and I feel sure I will be back there quite soon…Imight even convince OilMan to go….

We still had some time after dropping by the shop filled with Asian inspired items, so we took a quick hike through Jack London State Park. OilMan and I used to go there semi-regularly, but now that we live less than five miles away we never go. It is filled with interesting old buildings, miles of hiking trails, redwood groves and the ruins of the Wolf House, which burned to the ground before London and his wife could move in,. There is also a nice venue for summer picnics and music under the stars.

Will has arrived to help OilMan move some heavy bags of concrete in return for a steak. I am going to attempt a Sauce Bearnaise…..
