Thistle or What ?

I pass this patch of prickly plants most days in the dunes when taking the dogs for a walk. I have not seen it anywhere else and have been unable to identify it. I thought it was a type of thistle but no joy there. Its mauve stems and spiky leaves are quite distinctive and the flower heads seem to turn from pale green to purple. Any ideas ?
