Parachuting into the Bug Hotel

Today I've been on a course for beginners on identifying fungi. No, I'm not a beginner, but the course was part of the programme of our fungus group, and I went along partly as a helper, partly to pinch some ideas for a similar course I am co-leading with our recorder in about a month's time. Today's leader was Patrick Harding whom we are lucky enough to have as a member of our group. He is a well known author and lecturer, and is a charismatic and entertaining speaker. Recently, he has "retired", that is to say, he is doing less paid work, and limiting himself more to local activities. The course was largely indoors, to familiarise people with what to look for, and the ins and outs of identifying fungi, but we did have a trip out into the local woodland, and one of our finds was this parachute fungus on a small branch hiding amongst other bits of wood in a  bug hotel. I think it's the Collared Parachute - Marasmus rotula
