Victoria Tower

By 1897 Queen Victoria had reigned for over sixty years -   longer than any other monarch, and so a permanent memorial of this event was planned in the form of a tower perched on the hill overlooking the town of Huddersfield.   Despite some difficulty raising the money required, the tower was opened on the 24th June 1899,  at a cost of £3,298.

The Royal family, and perhaps Queen Victoria in particular are part of our culture, and even today beacons on top of the tower are occasionally lit to mark some event or other.

The threatening clouds in my photo lived up to their promise, and we've had a steady drizzle of rain for most of the day. :-))

Thank you to Ingeborg for hosting MM.
