Menorca Day 8: After the Fire

The wind had been blowing onshore on the day of the fire, from left to right in this image.

We went to Es Mercadel where there are lots of nice bakeries, in search of crespells (a local pastry biscuit), but we went too late (in the early afternoon) and all of them had closed. It was another ghost town (even the main shopping street), but we found lunch at a little cafe in the centre. The sun was baking down, so the shadows were appealing, and the rather surprising paraglider coming down on the edge of town caught the light nicely.

We stopped to look at the site(s) of the fire en route home. There were two main areas affected: one opposite Coves Noves, and across a road between Na Macaret and Cala Moli. The affected area was vast, and the thick ash on the ground (the remains of the brush and bushes) and scorched trees were rather dramatic.

I also took some macros in the afternoon (e.g. palm tree) and evening: an intriguing plume moth landed on the wall (see extra 1), and I liked the way that the Hibiscus flowers had closed up for the night (see extra 2).
