100 Years ago to the hour

On this day 100 Years ago my Great Grandfather won a Military Medal for his actions as a stretcher bearer on this field. At the exact time the advance took place I stood and paid my respects to him and to the many who gave their lives that day.

Thomas Whiston MM survived the war but those killed that day were buried here at Grandcourt Road Cemetery. Those who were not found after the battle are listed with the other 72,000 names on the nearby Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
