One of the advantages of living close to a canal is the chance passing of a swan while leaning over a bridge waiting for Anniemay to finish her blip(s).  

One of the disadvantages of living close to a canal (especially one that sees a lot of traffic) is oil stains on the water.  I’m sure these contribute to the patterns in the water.
