In search of autumn colour

We took a picnic to Glen Orchy today, about 50 minutes north. It's usually noted for good autumn colour - lots of oaks and birches - and you often see kayakers there - lots of raging water!

Today was so-so - some autumn colour though many birches were bare, probably stripped by the wind. No kayakers, in fact all the waterfalls and rapids were pretty low owing to the absence of the usual rain. Having said that, after driving out of the woods and into the open it was beautiful, so no complaints.

One thing it did bring up was the way that the natural landscape has changed and is changing - as seen by the row of alders on the left. There is no regeneration, owing to the sheep grazing happily beneath, so in 20 or 30 years time there will be nothing but a bare bank, which will probably be eroded away in the winter when the River Orchy floods. If we want to protect what is left of our natural landscape in the face of man's detemination to take over the entire planet we'll have to fence and replant - now!
