Across the Millennia

Housesteads Roman Fort was built in AD124 on Hadrian's Wall, high up above the surrounding countryside. At any one time it would have housed 800 to 1000 soldiers, so there would have been vast amounts of food, including flour for making bread, to store.

They built Granaries with thick walls, to keep food safe from fire, mould and pests. They used raised floors for a flow of air, to prevent moisture and to stop rodents from reaching the food.

The blocks on which the floors rested make a wonderful playground for two 21st century children.
