Wax Eye

Also known as Silver Eye and by the Maori name Tauhou. These are delightful little birds, tiny and always busy. Next to sparrows, they are now the most common birds in New Zealand.  They are prolific breeders and raise two or three broods per season.

I put out a fresh apple and the first to arrive were the wax eyes. They needed to be quick because it wasn't long before the blackbirds discovered the apple and literally tore it to shreds.
