Damage

Looking at the awful pictures of the devastation caused by earthquakes in New Zealand, reminded me of how last year this area was suffering from major damage after floods. On a much smaller scale of course, but it was still disruptive to the lives of many people. And the repairs are even now continuing.

As I was early for an appointment in Penrith, we thought we would go and have a look at Brougham Old Bridge, which is by the Castle and has been closed because of ‘major damage to substructure’ ever since the floods. Hazelina has kept up to date with what has been happening to the bridge and has posted pictures of the damage – it does look ‘major’!

So here it is at the moment, as repair work is taking place. It is difficult to see exactly what is going on, as the bridge has been securely fenced off and signs such as ‘DANGER OF DEATH’, ‘COLLAPSE IMMINENT’, are enough to put anyone off trying to get near.

Here is the bridge a year ago before the floods. And coincidently if you look at my blip on this day last year you will see I was in the same place. Although it was again pre the main floods, we had had a lot of rain and I took the picture of the river and commented about ‘how fast and furious’ the water was ‘flowing under the old bridge’ – I was on the bridge!
Sadly prophetic.
