Biggles May Fly Again

Not many of these about today, in fact this is the only one in Scotland. The aircraft is a Sopwith Camel as flown by Biggles in the First World War. Some people may not have heard of Biggles. He was a fictional character who had many adventures. There is a history of Biggles on Wikipedia. He was an early childhood hero of mine until I discovered James Bond.

The Sopwith Camel is a replica built in 1962 and it has flown, though possibly not recently. Even as a replica it is fifty years old. The plane is to be found at the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre. Apparently Montrose was the first operational RAF air base. Not much left of the airfield today as it is now mostly an industrial estate. Apparently some of the hangers which still exist go back to 1913.

An interesting visit before departing into the town centre in search of a coffee. Weather has been kind to us today after the downpour yesterday.
