This is the stairwell of the iconic Art Deco Midland Hotel in Morecambe. We are staying here tonight as we are going to a Maddy Prior Carols and Capers concert across the road at The Platform shortly, the old railway station building.
The hotel was originally opened in 1933 by The London Midland Rialway. It had fallen into a bit of a state when we visited some years ago and then Urban Splash took it on and renovated it. Since then we have kept saying we should come and stay. The concert was a perfect excuse as the last return train left before the concert started.

The train journey is through lovely countryside. Lots of sheep and winter bare trees but very grey and dull I'm afraid today. Unbeknown to me Chris had upgraded us to a sea view room. We can see the sea but not the wonderful Lakeland fells across Morecambe Bay and no chance of a sunset I'm afraid. Never mind this place is itself delightful.

We took a short stroll intending to walk along the pier but to our surprise it was closed off. We crossed the road to collect our tickets for this evening and then returned here to the bar for a pre dinner drink. Just as we sat down a whole party of people trouped through from a private function and onto the terrace outside in front of the bar. A firework display! Perfect timing. That's why the entry to the pier was closed off.

Really looking forward to the concert tonight. Lovely old carols and renaissance music. Very Christmassy. All in all a great pre Christmas treat.
