A Walk On The Whimsical Side

I visited my sister in Burnham-on-Crouch today and as usual we had a lovely Ollie dog walk. We have walked past the Creeksea Place Caravan Park before but never through it. It closed for the season at the end of last month and is now deserted. There was quite an eerie, ghost town feel about it.

The mobile homes are amongst the mature woods and lakes in the grounds of the beautiful Creeksea Place, which dates from 1569. I never knew of its existence. The BBC's adaption of Great Expectations was filmed in the walled garden and orchard. It is reputed to have been the home of Anne Boleyn and Queen Elizabeth is thought to have met her soldiers here. Maybe it's this history, coupled with the whimsical garden ornaments, that gave us the spooky feeling?

We then walked along the sea wall to the Cliff. When we used to sail the Crouch we knew the stretch of river below as Cliff Reach. I've never walked it before and was surprised by how high and steep it is - for Essex. :)
