Above And Beyond...

Pen-Y-Fan

Mrs BB wanted to do a walk and when I suggested Pen-Y-Fan in The Brecon Beacons she immediately thought it a good idea; I wanted to see some snow and I knew we would there!

We left home midday and by 1pm we were ascending the footpath to the summit. It's quite a slog made all the more difficult by compacted ice, slipping and sliding about. Near the top the summit vanished behind fog and the wind was so strong it was a battle to stay on your feet.

We did the statutory photo at the top with the National Trust sign denoting it as 886m high. As we started descending, the sun was starting to set and I took the blip photo. Not long after, a young woman and her 10 year old brother were in some difficulty so we helped them down to the car park. The young lad was clinging to me for warmth; a lovely lad from West Wales who was a real chatterbox and quite funny. The wind was so bad at one point that a few walkers, Mrs BB and the boys sister, were making their way down on the backsides so avoid being blown over or falling on the ice.

On making it back to our car, we drove them to their car, where they thanked us 'for saving their lives'. I wouldn't have put it that dramatically! We enjoyed a hot cuppa before the journey home. Certainly a memorable walk for them - and an enjoyable few hours for us.
