FABULOUS FRIDAY

After a disappointing afternoon yesterday when we couldn’t go out because the car battery was flat, we decided to visit Marlborough today - it probably had something to do with the fact that The Food Gallery, our favourite café, promised me a free coffee and brownie for my birthday.  I know it was a few days ago, but they weren’t actually open on the day so they kindly let me carry it over!

The café was crowded as always, so when a couple came in looking for a table, we invited them to join us and before too long got chatting - well it would be rude not to!  They also had two sons, who were teenagers, so as ours are now much older, we were able to reassure them that the teenage years do pass - eventually!  We hadn’t intended staying so long, but they were such a lovely couple, before we knew it, we had stayed another hour!

After doing some shopping, as we went back to the car, we stopped to look at the River Kennet which winds its way through Marlborough.  We were distracted by some ducks on the river and then Mr. HCB spotted a grey wagtail, when suddenly a kingfisher flew over us - but it was too fast and I couldn’t get my camera out in time.  However, we then saw a heron who stood very patiently in the river waiting for its lunch and I managed to take several photographs.

We didn’t drive back on the main road, but came across from Marlborough to Hackpen and saw several red kites in the sky.  At one time there were five flying around as well as a kestrel - a wonderful sight.  Further along, in a field at the side of the road, we saw several redwings and also quite a lot of fieldfares, both members of the thrush family.

Not a very good day, weatherwise, but in every other way it was great and we enjoyed every minute - the coffee and brownie were excellent too!
