Epiphany Elevenses

Bolo Rei: kings cake,
Portuguese Epiphany,
taste of Madeira

Bolo Rei is a traditional Portuguese sweet bread, with nuts and crystallized fruit. It's eaten over the Christmas period, but especially at Epiphany, today on twelfth night, when the Christian church commemorates the arrival in Bethlehem of the three kings. Surprising, then, that the supermarket's Bolo Rei were already reduced. It's quite rich but not too sweet, despite the fruit and icing sugar, and made a lovely elevenses. (With more to follow later.)
