The Windmill Project

My regular conservation group on Southborough Common has got together with the local archaeological society and been awarded some lottery money to clear and investigate the site of an old windmill.  In the undergrowth is a raised base and a trench formed from years of feet walking back and forth to move the sails to face the wind. This picture shows one section of the foot worn trench cleared of brambles and saplings.  The extra shows one of our new volunteers looking happy in his work.
The mill disappeared in the 1830s about the same time as Nutley Mill appeared.  The Southborough lot are pretty sure Nutley is the old Southborough mill. All the Nutley folks know, is that it their mill appeared in the 1830's and came from the Tunbridge Wells area somewhere.
