If you can't beat them...

Pendragon Castle.

We decided to go on a waterfall hunt and set of in reasonable weather.  Our route was taking us along roads neither I nor my brother had travelled before.  As we passed a farm gate I spotted a sign which said Pendragon Castle.   Had we lost our way and ended up in Wales?  Round the corner another sign and this ruin.

Cumbria has a number of places which claim connection with King Arthur, not least the earthwork near Penrith which claims to be his round table.   In reality the castle was built in the reign of William Rufus by Ranulph de Meschines.  It had over the centuries a number of famous owners such as Sir Hugh de Morville (one of the murderers of Thomas Beckett), and Lady Anne Clifford.

The it started to pour down so after a bacon and sausage butty in Hawes we abandoned the waterfalls and headed for home.
