Chick is growing fast

Not the best photo of some of our 14 Chobas but wanted to show how our newly born chick has developed since July.
In the photo middle, dark brown standing next to mum. The black hen in the middle has not been, despite the rain, in the tumble drier.

It - we don't yet know sex - is as tall as it's surrogate mother. Hopefully the realisation that it is not a bantam but a "proper" chicken will go smoothly. It has already started to chase away the bantams that are in the lower half of the existing pecking order.
Practice not to be recommended. We made the mistake once a few years ago of putting a chicken egg under a constantly brooding duck (we had no drake i.e. no fertilised duck eggs). The resulting chick turned out to be a psychic wreck.
Our only two brown bantams have started brooding over the last few weeks. We hope there is enough time to get any chicks safely through the winter but we will have to stop any further brooding hens. Apparently bantams are good brooders but we need the eggs as our 10 normal chickens are now so old that we are lucky to get 1 or 2 eggs a day. Yesterday I served Eggs Benedict to friends & had to use the bantam eggs. Taste good but you need to guess a bit with recipes i.e. for the Hollandaise.
