Moving Violations ... Day 1

Huh boy.  Today has been very long, and very traumatic.

The moving guys showed up this morning to bring everything we wanted to move from our old apartment to our new one, and then to load the truck with those items we don't want in the new place and drive them back to Connecticut tomorrow morning.  Then they will unload the truck, and reload it with things from the Connecticut house that we want in our new apartment.  All rather complicated.

Anyway.  This picture was taken early on in the day today.  At this point, Mr. W is still smiling and happy.  I have not yet burst into tears, or resorted to the bottle.  The trouble began when, in moving one of our antique chests of drawers from one place to another, they managed to snap off the veneer from one entire side of the top.  We winced, held back our anger, asked them calmly if they had managed to retain the broken pieces, and resolved that we could get the damage repaired.  Then it was time to move our large sleeper sofa.  We told the men that in order to get it out the front door, they would need to remove the feet (we knew this, because that is what had to be done when it was moved in some seven years ago.)  Despite this, they managed to gouge -- and I mean GOUGE -- the front door very deeply and in several places, making it look like an enraged tiger had attempted to gain access.  Whilst damaging the door, they also marred the sofa with a long streak of stain from said door, as well as somehow managing to "decorate" one side with a long line of puncture marks from ... God only knows what.  An antique drum table made it upstairs minus several drawer knobs.  An antique, framed print was stuffed into a cardboard box at a crazy angle, and then had several other non-related and somewhat weighty items pitched in on top.  Why the glass didn't smash, or the frame split, Heaven only knows.  They managed to add several deep scratches in the wood floors of the old place (I'm quite sure the new owners will not be pleased.)

God help us, tomorrow they will be loading several antique, delicate pieces onto their truck.  I don't think I will sleep at all tonight for worry.  I am going to stop writing now and have another stiff drink.  Goodnight.

Extra shows a small portion of the depredations perpetrated on the front door.
