Trade off

Security is always a trade off between accessibility, aesthetics and safety.

The pass holders entrance at Holyrood started out as a type of Edinbirgh High St close, the passageway leading to a door operated by the users security pass. There was a metal barrier but it was kept folded back.

But as the building has evolved. - and particularly after the Glasgow Airport attack which saw bollards installed beside the road and led to a new entrance building being constructed for the public - so the way in has changed. Now there are pass operated turnstiles as well.

Such alterations are always regrettable but alas also necessary as the dreadful events at Westminster have shown. But they have also placed in the spotlight the courage and dedication of those who work to protect the building and its democratic purpose .

They are the most vital and valuable part of the whole process.
