Caen Hill (Wednesday 26th April 2017)

We seem to have had all four seasons today, and yesterday there was hail and snow. I set out for Hampshire in the morning but ended up buying socks, pants and slippers in Melksham instead when the weather took a dark turn for the worse. It improved in the afternoon but by then I was on my way back.
I stopped at Caen Hill Café for a bacon and fried egg bap, which I ate ouitside in sunshine while overlooking the canal and side pond, before checking on the swans.
The Wessex Rose was passing through the locks and in the background you can see the pen swan sitting on the nest (between the three boats) and the cob swan at the far end of the side pond behind Monument Lock.
I then ventured up the canal towards Devizes to see if there was any sign of last year's cygnet. It had been absent last time, but the time before that it had been joined by a new partner, and I wondered if they had both left to seek new territory. However, today I found the original cygnet on its own a little further on, and wondered if the new partnership had foundered.
After I had gone under the road bridge and was passing the Black Horse I found another cygnet. It seemed a little older than the first as it had few brown feathers still, and I do not know if it was the same significant other or if it was from the family at Devizes Wharf. A little later it did take off and fly in the direction of the Wharf.
This little duckling had become separated from its family by the lock gates opening and closing. Hope it was reunited.
