Ceanothus

The intense blueness of ceanothus is the outstanding feature in the garden in mid-May. Even the tulips have to concede that it's no contest. It's peaking today and tomorrow I think - about 98% out today and no flowers yet going over. The bees are going crazy harvesting the nectar, and the whole bush smells of honey whilst the flowers are out. Then it'll be over for another year and the balance of colour in the garden will be restored. But it's so dramatic that I don't mind its hogging the limelight for a week or two. It's one of the great joys of the spring garden, and reminded me today that the swifts should arrive this week sometime too. Another heartwarming annual event to look forward to.
