First Foxgloves

I love a calm evening walk
when traffic's trickled to nothing.
Between silences
birdsong fills the air.

Seeding grass heads lie
the way the wind left them.
Buttercups and speedwell
half-close their eyes.

Birds watch us go by
from rooftop, church tower,
weathercock, wall.

Swallows swoop and scribble
across the sky, finding midges,
moths, mosquitoes.

We feel as if we're on holiday,
with timeless todays and tomorrows,
on our calm evening walk.
