Allium schubertii

I can't really figure out how to photograph this allium effectively. With the LX3 I don't think I can get a workable depth of field to subdue the background while retaining focus on the whole flower. 

They're extraordinary - the individual stems within the flower head are mostly about 6 inches long, but they flower first on shorter stems in the centre. They look rather as if they've arrived from some other planet and are effortlessly showing off their ability to outdo anything their Earthly cousins can come up with.
